AceOn Group was founded in 2010 by the Thompson family in Solihull, building on a legacy of success in battery innovation that dates back to the 1990s in the West Midlands. In 2012, AceOn expanded by acquiring the Univercell Battery Company, consolidating all manufacturing operations at its Telford facility, an established production site active since 1993. This gives the business over three decades of hands-on battery design and production expertise.

Recent Projects & Exciting Developments

Case Study: RESTORE UK

In recent years, we have been involved in numerous exciting projects, none more so than RESTORE, a UK first in clean vessel technology.

The RESTORE project (Retrofittable Propulsion System for Electric Vessels with Hydrogen Range Extender) has pioneered one of the UK’s first hybrid hydrogen-battery electric propulsion systems for commercial vessels.

We were challenged to retain the vessel’s original diesel setup while integrating a new, eco-friendly electric propulsion system. This involved installing dual battery banks, charged at sea by an onboard hydrogen-powered generator.

We used hydrogen tanks to supply fuel to a generator that charges one battery bank, while the other powers the vessel’s electric motor. When the active battery runs low, the system seamlessly switches, maintaining continuous propulsion and charging, enabling zero-emission operation.

In 2025, we, along with our partners, conducted successful sea trials in the North Sea, including a journey to EDF Renewables’ Blyth wind farm, which proved the concept’s effectiveness. This retrofit offers a scalable, clean solution shaping the future of maritime transport.

Chi Onwurah MP, Chair of the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, recently toured the vessel:
